Simple things are the same wherever they are; it is their context which gives us perspective. Sarah Barbasch's journey out of her own environment to see things in a different way makes displacement central to her work.

Barbasch's intention is to be unselfish in her photography; to not need too much control over the things she photographs. She allows each story to unfold rather than holding strong preconceptions.

Her work encompasses a creative exploration of the relationship between outsider and insider, artist and subject through photography, moving image and sound. Through a focus on dialogue over direction, she gains a better understanding and 'feel' for a place and its people. As much as any outsider can.
